Started in 2001, the .NAME top-level domain extension is the single TLD meant for personal sites only. These domain names can consist of personal or fictional names, aliases and/or other designations people are known by. Initially, solely third-level registrations were possible, so if you wanted to secure john.doe.name, you would have to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was liberalized and second-level registrations were also permitted. Already grabbed third-level domain names remained working.
